There are three important steps to take before using VAC effectively.

Open "Speech" from the Control Panel.

  1. Ensure "Microsoft English Recognizer v5.1" is selected in the Language section of Speech Properties.
  2. Configure your microphone by running the microphone wizard.
  3. Take 10 minutes to train a profile, the more training the better and can be spread out over time.

Those are the basic steps and once finished should give reliable voice recognition.

To help recognize commands that sound the same move the Pronunciation slider toward the high setting.

There are three things to that make up a command:

  1. An Action description.
  2. A Phrase.
  3. Key Command(s).

An Action is a description, like “Fold Wings” or “Start Engine 1”.

A Phrase is what will be spoken to issue the Action Command like “Fold Wings” or “Start One”.

Key Commands are the keyboard commands that will issue the command like “Shift W” or “i”. All the commands necessary to perform the action.

Each action can have more than one key command as an example you could assign these key commands to the Action “Start Engine 1”.

“CTRL 1” – Select engine one.

“CTRL s” – Start engine.

“CTRL a” – Select all engines.

Each Key Command can have attributes that can be assigned.

“Toggle” – Will issue and hold the key until the key is issued again. If Toggle is selected the attributes Duration, Pause and Repeat will be ignored.

“Duration” – The length of time the key is held down before being release.

“Pause” – The length of time to wait after the key was released.

“Repeat” – The number of times to press the key.

The Character input box can only be used with extended keys of "NONE, CTRL, ALT and ENTER" any other extended keys will disable the character input box. The character input box can accept strings or a single character.
